Fur care
The coat of the Pyrenean Mountain Dog does not require much attention, a daily brushing is sufficient. Pay attention to the areas behind the ears where the manes tend to stick easily. The most suitable brush is the ActiVet PRO Soft.
Once a year the males and twice a year the females have the fur curls. Mostly in late spring. Brush your dog thoroughly during this time to remove as much dead hair as possible. We use an undercoat rake for these purposes to make it easier to remove the undercoat. For knots behind the ears and in the breeches, use a comb with sharp blades.
Wash
Never wash the Pyrenee, especially before the vaccination. The coat of the Patou is self-cleaning: the slightly oily coat protects him against too much cold in winter or too much heat in summer. Shampooing destroys this protective layer. If the coat is really dirty, use a shampoo for dogs and not for humans.
Claws and nails
The Pyrenean have the double dewclaws on each rear leg. These must not be removed under any circumstances! They are part of the breed standard. The dewclaws must be constantly monitored and regularly trimmed because they grow in a circle and cun penetrate the sikn and cause pain.
Specially designed nail cutters are used for this and can be found in the pet shops.
